VOICE

Deep with a warm timbre. Tone ranges from wise and gentle to wacky uncle on mushrooms.

STYLE

Practical and rustic, with an androgynous presentation. Vyng wears dark, shabby wools he's patched and mended many times. Leather pouches hang from his belt. Whenever he moves, you may hear mason jars clinking together. He usually carries an an old staff that has been converted into a spear, with numerous elven runes and cracks suggesting it has been broken (and repaired) many times before.

In other words, Vyng comes across as somebody who reuses or repurposes things most people would have thrown away. He is someone who treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. (The same can be said for his treatment of people's flaws as well.)

Vyng was created by Paul Henry Oppers on Spout Lore, a comedy AP podcast about two dads and their adopted halfling son.

• ABILITIES & SKILLS •

HERBALISM & FORAGING

Vyng can concoct an assortment of poultices, tinctures, and drinks to alleviate various ailments. He also has a knack for living off the land wherever he goes, due to an intense interest in local flora and a deep connection with nature in general.

ELEMENTAL ABILITIES

After sacrificing his ability to change into animals at Deerington's Summoning Stones, Vyng developed a more harmonious relationship with the elements. As of January 2022, he has the following elemental abilities:

Elemental Mastery: Vyng can move and shape the elements as if they're an extension of himself. Due to the raw nature of his powers, however, he doesn't always retain control. Sometimes this has disastrous consequences.

Light As A Feather: Manipulating the air allows Vyng to walk and run across things that wouldn't ordinarily hold his weight (such as clothes lines, flocks of birds, and bodies of water).

Shapeshifting: Most of the utility from before is gone, but Vyng can still turn into elements. Since he can't turn into creatures anymore, however, it will mainly be up to other characters to make Vyng's form useful.

Eye of the Storm: He can exert his will to calm the elements around him (the earth below his feet stops breaking apart, fires he touches go out, storms break around him and his allies, etc). A weaker version of this is exerting his will on elements he touches, but only while he's touching them. How strong or weak it is will depend on a combination of luck, circumstance and whatever is appropriate from a player standpoint.

SPIRITUAL ABILITIES

As a druid, Vyng is spiritually connected to the creatures, places and things around him. This manifests in a variety of ways, including:

Spirit Tongue: The ability to speak with animals, plants and the elements as naturally as using his own language.

Eyes of the Tiger: Allows Vyng to see through the eyes of an animal he's marked. He can only have one animal marked at a time (aside from his animal companion).

Communion of Whispers: Vyng receives a vision that can be helpful, murky, or just plan traumatic. Sometimes it grants him clairvoyance, and he can witness events that happened in the distant past.

Studied Essence: A meditative practice that allows Vyng to learn more about a creature or thing. This often results in a newly-forged spiritual bond between him and whatever he is studying.

By Nature Sustained: Vyng doesn't need to worry about rations. His connection with nature makes it so that whatever he forages will be enough to keep him from going hungry.

MARTIAL ABILITIES

Vyng can no longer rely on his shapeshifting in Deer Country. Instead, he beats ass with his bare hand. Here's a brief summary of what he can do:

Fight With Honor: Agility, speed and strength are Vyng's strong suits in hand-to-hand combat. He is a newly-taught martial artist who incorporates a blend of techniques he's learned from others and on-the-fly bullshit. Vyng often draws inspiration from other animals while fighting.

Nature's Fury: Vyng's martial attacks are augmented by his elemental powers.

OTHER ABILITIES

Vyng is a skilled sailor and ice racer. He's also a musician who plays the harp. Thanks to being raised on a frozen tundra, he cannot be blinded by bright light.

• APPEARANCE •

"Monster" or "weirdo" are words people have used to describe Vyng's appearance. Noteworthy things include:

Elven Heritage: Pointed ears, angular features, and Vyng's tall, willowy frame are common traits of those with elven blood back home.

Fish Gills: A pair of fish gills — three slits on each side of the neck — flare in and out with each breath. These are his "tell" that mark him as a druid back home.

Scars & Tattoos: Purple fractal scars run up Vyng's hands and arms. He also has runes tattooed in dark ink on both arms.

Noticable Jewelry: A black glass ring that emits a soft glow. This ring allows him to share memories with Tuck or Billie, as long as Billie is there to activate it.

Crystal Heart: A hollow amethyst geode is embedded into Vyng's chest. It glows a soft purple, kind of like the druid version of Tony Stark.

• PERSONALITY •

Remember the older kid in your school who skipped class, smoked, and quoted Emmanual Kant? You went over to his house once for dinner and his mom and dad stared coldly at each other through the whole thing, then at the end they announced they were getting a divorce. That’s Vyng. He’s moody, wise, quiet, intense. He’s got profound daddy issues and is strangely good with women. [Source]

Vyng is generally laidback and relaxed about most things. His entire life revolves around the spiritual and mystical. This grants him perspective, self-awareness and a genuine desire to accept things he cannot change, even if it's not always easy. When faced with conflict, his first inclination is to empathize and try persuading people to see reason with his words (unlike Tuck, who prefers his fists).

You could say Vyng is the wisest person in his strange little family. At the same time, that's partly because he hangs around people with poor impulse control and a penchant for property damage.

This means he's usually saddled with the "mom" role (albeit with a more free-range parenting style). When the chips are down, his companions look to him for guidance and protection. The extra responsibility means Vyng is prone to overindulging in booze, sex or spa treatments when the opportunity arises...but at the end of the day, Vyng truly is happiest when he can nurture and care for others.

Don't let his chill wiseman/caretaker persona fool you, though. Vyng knows he's an idiot, and he'll be the first to tell you. Despite being an expert outdoorsman, he's absolutely the type of person to argue that north is "up" with a straight face. At the same time, Vyng can become quite calculating and shrewd when backed into a corner...and he uses that stupidity to obfuscate things he wants to hide or downplay about himself.

Despite his personal baggage, Vyng will gladly support whatever crazy bullshit his friends get into. He will just as gladly jump headfirst into trouble to make sure they get out alive. Whether it's screaming backup vocals for Tuck's latest metal song, or helping his family free a dangerous wizard from prison...Vyng is your man, and he is down to clown.

TL;DR: Wise elf druid on the outside. Total dumbfuck on the inside. He keeps plenty close to the vest, however, and will strategically use that stupidity to his advantage. But despite his flaws, he does his best to nurture and care for the people and things around him...especially if that means hopping aboard whatever crazy train his friends are riding.
