Chaos in Cassandra [Mini Player Plot]

Hello, Deerlings ♥

This mini-event set for July 28-ish in Cassandra gives your character a chance to:

Team up with Sleepers for ridiculous "Home Alone meets Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame" style of looney tunes shenanigans

Go apeshit on some Trenchies (or maybe Sleepers) during a literal mob

Show off intel-gathering skills

Be a hero by helping this sweet lil family escape (I MEAN, LOOK AT THEM, HOW CAN YOU SAY NO)

Piss off some locals and maybe get chased outta town for any length of time

If one (or more) of these things are of interest to you, then strap in! You're in the right place, buddy.

I. The Inciting Incident

July is the month of the Reckoning. In the wake of Mariana's soothing ritual, Trenchies are still furious over Mariana's defilement (courtesy of Boatgate)...and they're itching for a scapegoat. Vyng (who's been working as both an Arcane Scholar and a Disciple) is a convenient target. According to the rumors, this is because: 1) His role in the ritual was wayyyy too close to directly communing with a Patron Pthumerians in their eyes, 2) He's had tensions with Disciples in the past due to his particular powerset mixed with a desire to understand Pthumerians, and 3) to add insult to injury, he's a Warmblood who lacks potential in blood magic.

Tensions come to a head when Vyng — whose body is still weak from the ritual — is strung up to be burned at the stake. (You know, like an old-fashioned witch burning.)

Tuck will swing in to save him, get to a nearby abandoned building, and BELLOW AS LOUD AS A BELL RINGING THROUGH THE NEIGHBORHOOD that it is a sanctuary now.

This is totally how it looks in Tuck's head, guys.

...He saw it in a play once. That's how things work in this world, right? (It is not.)

II. The Siege & Escape

With a little help from a friend or two, Tuck and co. will claim an abandoned (?) house for themselves. Of course, hunkering down into a hidey-house will not quell the mob. These Trenches still have their pitchforks and torches. They are on a mission for a proper ROAST.

Potential ways characters can be involved:

Alert other Sleepers of shit going down in Cassandra (via network or otherwise)

Defend the house (either from inside or outside)

TRAPS??

Go vigilante or full-on beast on Trenchies in the mob

Hell, go vigilante (!?) on anyone defending these chucklefucks**

Be Evil and spread C H A O S (if that's your bag)

Collect and share intel about possible escape routes to the nearest lamp location

Crowd-thinning (peaceful or otherwise)

Escape assistance

**Note: If your character falls on the Trenchies' side of The Roastening, they will have to contend with either a housecat-sized child (with a serious bodycount) or a 7-foot-tall, 5-foot-wide warrior (with a semi-sentient axe). Alternatively, you will likely make a friend for life if they see you helping even a little bit.

III. Aftermath

With their main target gone, some of the townspeople might turn their anger toward Sleepers who thwarted their BBQ. Anybody looking to escape the heat is welcome to crash at Trenchwood Farm with Vyng's fam for awhile. It's far enough from town that mobs shouldn't be a problem here. All misfists and outcasts are welcome!

Ways characters can be involved:

Wellness checks (tending wounds, general check-ins with folks who were involved)

Extra protection/patrols for anyone who might need it (the farm, other Sleepers, etc.)

Revenge (that's always a good idea, right?)

Woah, hey. Hi. What's up, Sleepers?

[The feed shakes as Vyng walks through the inner compound of Trenchwood Farm. Behind him is a surprisingly cheery farmhouse. At the same time, a low roll of thunder sounds from overhead.]

Looks like we've got some nasty weather. On the plus side, if you catch the rainwater at just the right time? It's, like...the perfect temperature for boiling a pot of—

["YOU!" Tuck — a 7-foot-fall mountain of a man can be seen furiously pointing at a rooster in the background. "This is your fault!"]

Ahahah. One se—

[The feed goes dark. About 5 minutes later, Vyng's face fills the screen again. He takes a hefty CHOMP out of a raw zucchini.]

....Anyways. Me and these lovely ladies here— [The camera pans over a flock of chickens scratching around in the grass for treats, some of whom are wearing crocheted hats] —decided today's a great day for a sleepover. We've got snacks, we've got these beautiful fairy lights strung up around the compound. Oh, and, almost forgot—

[Endless sky fills the screen, along with walls of clouds surrounding the compound. But, like the eye of a hurricane, the air directly overhead is calm and clear.]

Storm shelters? Psh. Never heard of 'em. Over at Trenchwood Farm, storms shelter you. So, come on over. Hunker down. Bunk up with a feathered friend, and ride out the storm with us.

[The camera shifts back to Vyng's face, eyebrows raised.]

Or don't. I'm not your mom, do whatever you want.

[His expression grows more somber.]

On the other hand, I could use some aid in keepin' this storm off our collective butts over here. So if you can help out with spirit stuff? Weather stuff? Whatever stuff. That'd be amazing. All the farm animals would love you.

We'll make a fun time out of it. You know what they say: When life gives you a downpour, pour down some drinks and pass 'em around.

[He stares at the camera.]

TRENCHWOOD FARM

Type of Location: Business + Home + Community Project
Location: Feed
Lamp Location: Yes
Identifiers: Grounds (about four acres) are ringed with a razor fence that's three layers deep and also covered in powerful wards and antlers.
Hours of Operation: 7AM - 7PM
Employees/Roommates: Various - currently accepting full or part-time help
Means of Contact: Either 1) arriving in person or 2) dropping a line onto local druid (and interim caretaker) Vyng Vang Zoombah's personal inbox

Trenchwood Farm is all the way out in Feed, but remains easily accessible by lantern. It produces roughly 1000 eggs a week and 600 meat birds a month. Produce is vibrant and varied with protected, clean soil and many, many rings of fortification.

If visitors arrive by lamp, they will appear in front a farmhouse of mid-century Australian design.

Behind the house is a gated courtyard, which contains:

Newly-constructed stables for resident horses Zelda (a whippet of a thoroughbred racer) and Aoife (an enormous shire)
Partially-finished iron and glass greenhouse that's behind the stables
A long row of hoop houses to the side (for seedling work until the greenhouse is completed)
A Guardian Tree behind the greenhouse
A path up to the great barn where the chickens and a workshop tenuously share space
A few other outbuildings on a quarter of an acre or so

This inner compound is where most of the action takes place. Even when it's dark, an enormous flock of chickens are often out and scratching around for moonlit treats. These are normal chickens, in many breeds, but...curiously, some of them are wearing little crochet hats. (A tradition started by Raleigh Becket, one of the farm's previous owners. It still continues under the new stewards.)

Previous owners Raleigh Becket and Chuck Hanson put months of constant hard labor into getting this project off the ground, and it shows. The entire place is thriving with lush gardens both floral and edible, originally helped along by Raleigh's power shift, and continues to be maintained by generous Sleepers and Trenchies alike. Machinery dots the property, along with palettes of wooden egg boxes and straw. A military ATV is parked behind the back of the house (the wraparound porch of which looks out over the busy hub behind).

Prompt under cut!!

He's hanging out beneath the pink water. His gills are flaring in and out. In a deep meditative state. The water's soothing properties keep him grounded. Unlike his bathtime meditation session in December, he doesn't need to drift closer and further away from darker memories like a skittish fish. Instead, he confronts the memory head-on -- mainly, the perpetrator of his horrible, no-good time at the Summoning Stones: Himself.

Well, it wasn't exactly himself. A ghastly elf — no, a monster — looming over him. An undead chimera of animal parts covered in moss and black glass. Eyes like river stones, pale and dull beneath translucent ice. A rattling gasp. Its mouth splits open to reveal the gaping maw of a glass-fanged viperfish.

Inside this lucid state, he stares down the creature. Within the soothing water, his fight-or-flight instincts are under control. Smoothly and calmly, he looks at him.

Even when the creature grasps onto the side of his face with pale, spindly fingers.

Is he just learning to sit with it? Is he supposed to talk to it? He's never stared down self-loathing before.

"Well," he says, deadpanned. "I don't think kissing is gonna do anything."

But then he sees another presence up ahead. And blinks.

"Oh. It's you."

[Vyng's a mess: Wet, gray hair plastered to his face. Black sand clinging to his clothing and neck. Gills flaring in and out with exertion, while his expression pinches with pain. Observant Sleepers might notice pieces of wool sticking out of his pointy elven ears.]

Orpheus needs help. Eurydice, she...

[He takes a breath, giving himself a moment to collect his thoughts.]

She's moved on. Like many of us will someday.

But as soon as they separated, he turned into a large beast and flew off. Somewhere toward the Rocks, south of the Farthest Shore.

[With some shaky maneuvering, Vyng points the camera so it's overlooking the magnificent grey Pthumerian Ocean. In the distance, a large bird-like creature circles over the water. From offscreen, Vyng continues:]

Four wings. Antlers. Difficult to miss. His songs are like a mermaid's — I think...I think they lure people into the ocean. Be careful, everyone.

[The image lowers toward the wet sand. Vyng's last words before the feed cuts off, almost too quiet to be heard over the sea wind, filter through:]

I'm sorry.
